Governance

External Governance

The biobank complies with external requirements from

  • Canadian legislation and regulations governing human tissue, data protection, and research with human subjects
  • Canadian professional codes of conduct where these overlap with stakeholders’ activities (e.g., Medical licensing bodies and societies).
  • Canadian biobank standard and best practices
  • Funder and institutional requirements
  • Research Ethics Board (REB)

Internal Governance

The BC Biobank Network (BCBN) employs a governance structure with reporting to a steering committee composed of health authority and academic leaders as well as biobanking experts. Multiple sites participate in the BCBN.

BCBN partners are expected to:

  • Participate as part of the BCBN Governance Committee to provide leadership, oversight, and direction for Network activities.
  • Participate in the BCBN Scientific Review Committee to review requests and facilitate equitable access to biospecimens and/or data by researchers.
  • Remain in control of their own biobanking operations.
  • Contribute and/or utilize BCBN infrastructure, resources, equipment as needed.

Governance Committee

The Governance Committee (GC) is responsible for the administration and oversight of all aspects of the Network Infrastructure including Budget, Provincial Operations, the Inventory Management System, the Scientific Review Committee and Patient Advisory Committee. In its mandate to oversee the general function of the BCBN, the GC reviews the priorities around the nature, quality, and quantity of biospecimens and data and ensures appropriate quality control for the acquisition and storage of the biospecimens and data. In addition, the GC is responsible for liaising with all sites to ensure each groups needs are met in an equitable manner.
